What Is the Champions League?

The Champions League is UEFA’s premier club competition, contested each season by the best teams from Europe’s domestic leagues. It began in 1955 as the European Cup and was rebranded in 1992. The winner is crowned champion of Europe and earns a place in the following season’s edition.

Real Madrid are the record holders and the competition’s defining club. Spanish sides have lifted the trophy more than those of any other nation, which is why every Champions League season matters here.

How the Champions League Works

Since 2024/25, the competition uses a single league phase instead of separate groups. All 36 clubs sit in one table, and each plays eight different opponents: four at home, four away.

The table then splits three ways:

From the Round of 16 it becomes a familiar two-legged knockout bracket, ending in a single-match final.

The Champions League 2026/27 Season

Twenty-nine clubs qualified directly for the league phase; the last seven places come through the summer qualifiers, which were played just now. The league-phase draw on 27 August 2026 sets every fixture, and the action runs from 8 September 2026 to the final in Madrid.

Spanish Clubs in the Champions League

Five La Liga sides qualified directly for 2026/27:

With the final in Madrid, a Real Madrid or Atlético run to their home city is one of the season’s biggest storylines.

England also fields five clubs — Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool.
