Jürgen Klopp has his first win as Germany manager. A 2-0 victory over Serbia on 1st of October, with Florian Wirtz at the heart of both goals, took Germany to four points, while Greece, who beat them 1-0 on 27 September, let a two-goal lead slip against the Netherlands the same night and drew 2-2. Germany now visit the Group A2 leaders on Sunday 4 October 2026 (kick-off 19:45 BST) with a chance to close the gap.

Form & what’s at stake

Greece sit top of Group A2 with seven points from three games and a goal difference of +2, still unbeaten. They went 2-0 up against the Netherlands at Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki through Fotis Ioannidis (23rd minute) and Giorgos Masouras (45+2), each of whom set up the other. Virgil van Dijk pulled one back in the 59th, and Tijjani Reijnders equalised in the 89th, after Xavi sent on Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch and others at the interval. A famous win slipped away, but Greece still lead the table.

Germany’s evening in Munich was calmer. Tom Bischof scored just before half-time and Wirtz added a second in the 61st minute, in a game where Germany had 23 attempts to Serbia’s one shot on target, according to match reports. That makes four points from one win, one draw and one defeat, with a goal difference of +1, and Klopp’s public line that the team needs time to find itself looks better after Thursday.

The stakes are simple. A German win would put them level with Greece on seven points and make Sunday a proper group decider. A Greek win would open a six-point gap over Germany with two games left. A draw leaves both unhappy, and because the next window is in mid-November, nobody gets another go for six weeks.

Team news & injuries

Germany’s injury list has grown. Nico Schlotterbeck has left camp with a right ankle injury and will miss both the Serbia and Greece games, though the good news is he will not need surgery. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz withdrew earlier with muscle strains, and Joshua Kimmich is not in the squad for either October game, according to reports. Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt were called up as cover, and Wirtz has made the most of the chance.

Greece have no reported injuries, though they will want to rest legs after a draw that needed a lot of running, and Ivan Jovanović has stayed with a consistent group all month in which Ioannidis and Masouras have earned their places.

Predicted line-ups

No confirmed XI was available at the time of writing.

Greece: Expect little change from the side that started against the Netherlands. Ioannidis and Masouras are in form, and Kourbelis, who scored the winner against Germany, is a candidate to start again.

Germany: Wirtz is the creative centre, and Bischof is the goalscorer of the moment. Klopp will keep the shape that created 23 chances against Serbia, though the defence has to adjust without Schlotterbeck.

The key battle

Wirtz against Greece’s midfield. Greece were organised enough to win 1-0 last week, and Wirtz has just shown what he can do when he gets time on the ball. Space is the issue. If Greece give him room, Germany will score. If they squeeze him, they can force a scrap again, but Greece’s problem on Thursday was holding a lead for 90 minutes, which is a different skill from winning one, and Germany have more quality to exploit that weakness.

Greece vs Germany Predictions & tips

Germany arrive with momentum and better individual quality. Greece have home advantage, the form of the table’s leader and the memory of beating this opponent, so the game should be close until late. Germany have scored in two of their three games, Greece in all of them, and the balance of the matches suggests Germany will find a way, narrowly.

Tip: Germany double chance (win or draw). Predicted score: Greece 1-2 Germany.
