Manchester City signed Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for £125m on deadline day, 1 September 2026. The fee matches Liverpool’s move for Alexander Isak, a joint British record. Fernández has signed a five-year deal. ESPN reported City went £5m above Chelsea’s £120m valuation, with the deal landing in the final minutes before the 22:00 window closed.

Why City paid it
City spent the summer dismantling their own midfield. Rodri left for Barcelona. Bernardo Silva, Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders all followed him out. That is a lot of passing to replace in one window.
Enzo Maresca, appointed on 29 June 2026 to succeed Pep Guardiola on a three-year deal, drove the move. He coached Fernández at Chelsea and wanted him from the start. City’s new central three of Fernández, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi cost north of £300m between them.
None of them is Rodri. That is the honest version of what City have just done.
Fernández wanted to go, and stopped hiding it. He was dropped for two matches in April 2026 after publicly flirting with Real Madrid. He was booed by his own supporters in preseason and again on the opening day. Xabi Alonso left him out of the Carabao Cup win over Luton.
Chelsea set a 14 August deadline for bids, and City did not move. Two weeks later, City came back and paid over the asking price anyway. Chelsea have taken £125m for a 25-year-old who scored 10 and assisted four last season, and who had made the dressing room’s decision for them.
The verdict
This is good business for both, which is rare. Chelsea banked a record fee for a player whose head had gone. City got a genuine tempo-setter at the age where he should be at his peak.
The risk is structural, not personal. Fernández is a progressor, not a screener. He drifts high, he gives the ball away in dangerous areas, and Rodri used to clean that up. Maresca has bought a midfield full of players who want to move forward and nobody obvious to sit.
