Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October (kick-off 8 pm UK time) in the first Clásico of the 2026-27 season. It is a strange one. Barcelona lead La Liga with a perfect league record but lost their first game of the season in Paris on Tuesday. Real Madrid arrive under José Mourinho, who is back in the fixture for the first time since 2013, without the suspended Vinícius Júnior, fresh off two 4-1 wins, and with Kylian Mbappé on 11 goals in 11 games.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place in London the next night, and two of the favourites will be on the pitch. So could this match be Mbappé vs Yamal?

This guide has everything in one place: the facts, the form, the two coaches, the history, the tactics, the team news and our prediction.

Why this Clásico is different

Every Clásico is billed as the biggest of the year. This one has a better case than most.

Mourinho is back. The Portuguese managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 and faced Barcelona in 17 Clásicos, winning five, drawing six, and losing six, with 25 goals for and 31 against. He was appointed again in June 2026. This is his first Clásico of the second spell, and the first time he has faced Hansi Flick. In his first spell, the two teams went to “war” against each other.

Barcelona are perfect in the league, and wounded in Europe. They beat Real Betis 5-2 on 17 October to become only the second side in La Liga history, after Real Madrid in 1968-69, to win their first nine league games. They had won 11 of 11 in all competitions before Tuesday, when they lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain.

The gap. Barcelona have 27 points. Atlético Madrid are second on 22 and Real Madrid third on 21, after beating Sevilla 4-1 on 18 October. The gap to Real is six points, so a Real Madrid win would cut it to three. Barcelona are also the reigning champions, having clinched the title against Madrid in this fixture in May.

The Ballon d’Or. The ceremony is at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, with voting already closed. Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé are both nominees. Harry Kane was the 1/3 favourite on 22 October, with William Hill, with Yamal at 2/1 and Mbappé at 16/1. The Clásico cannot change the vote, but it will change the headlines.

Where Barcelona are

Hansi Flick’s side are perfect in La Liga: nine wins, 27 points, top of the table. In the Champions League, they beat Feyenoord 5-1 and Galatasaray 4-1 in Istanbul, and they had won eleven games in a row in all competitions before the trip to Paris. Before the Betis game, they had scored 43 goals this season, with seven different players scoring more than once.

Then came Tuesday. At the Parc des Princes, Barcelona trailed to a Désiré Doué goal in the 38th minute, equalised early in the second half through Xavi Espart, went behind again to a Lucas Hernández header from a corner, and levelled through Lamine Yamal around the 79th minute. Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz scored late for PSG to win it 4-2. It was Barcelona’s first defeat of the season.

It was also expensive. Dani Olmo went off after a collision with Vitinha and is out with a serious muscle problem. Andreas Christensen, Eric García, and Roony Bardghji are also out, and Jules Koundé is a doubt. Raphinha came back from his thigh problem as a substitute against Betis and is available.

The weakness is at the back, and Paris proved it. Flick’s side defends with a high line, and it has cost them in the Champions League. They conceded to Galatasaray from their only real chance, they allowed Betis two goals on 17 October, and they conceded four to PSG. The coach is aware of it. “Decision-making in the final third and transitions were not the best,” he said after Istanbul. Clean sheets have been a problem in Europe, according to Barça Universal’s analysis.

Where Real Madrid are

Real Madrid are third in La Liga with 21 points from nine games, six behind Barcelona. The league record was uneven early: they lost at Real Betis and at Atlético Madrid, then beat Villarreal 1-0 on 10 October in a game in which Vinícius was sent off. Since then, the form has changed. They beat Sevilla 4-1 at the Bernabéu on 18 October, with Arda Güler scoring in the 30th minute and Mbappé in the 37th, then again from a Panenka penalty after the break, and Yan Diomande completing the scoring after Manu Bueno’s consolation.

On Wednesday 21 October, they beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in the Champions League to stay perfect in the competition. Mbappé now has 11 goals in 11 games across competitions.

Their European form is better. Real Madrid beat Inter 2-1 on matchday one, then won 4-3 at Roma, trailing 3-1 until the 82nd minute. The comeback came from set pieces: Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger scored from corners, with Arda Güler providing two assists. Mbappé scored the equaliser in the 25th minute in his 100th Champions League appearance, taking his tally to 72 European goals.

Mourinho’s reaction was strangely calm. Maybe it’s not the same Mourinho we saw before. The tactical story from Rome was that Real Madrid didn’t control the match, but they still produced an xG of 1.655 despite having less of the ball, and Mourinho’s substitutions changed that. Güler and Endrick replaced Vinícius and Dumfries in the 59th minute; Güler became an inverted playmaker, and in the final eight minutes Madrid went all-out 3-2-5.

The problems are still there. Goal described Madrid’s back line in Rome as “disjointed”, and the absentees are Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo and Raúl Asencio, plus Vinícius, who is out on suspension. Éder Militão no longer appears on the latest injury lists; he was on the bench on Wednesday against Leipzig, but didn’t get minutes. Dean Huijsen is back from suspension. The centre-back pairing for the Clásico will probably be Rüdiger with either Konaté or Huijsen, but it is not settled.

And then there is Vinícius. The Spanish federation’s disciplinary committee announced his four-match ban on Wednesday 14 October, right before the Champions League game, after VAR spotted him pulling an opponent’s hair in the build-up to a disallowed goal, and he was sent off against Villarreal. The ban covers four league games, which include the Sevilla match and the Clásico. He remains available for the Champions League.

Two coaches, one old grudge

José Mourinho is the oldest story in this fixture. His first Clásico was a 5-0 defeat at the Camp Nou on 29 November 2010, the heaviest defeat of his career to that point. Over the next two and a half years, he rebuilt Madrid into a counter-attacking machine around Cristiano Ronaldo, Ángel Di María and Mesut Özil.

His record is a battle: a 1-0 extra-time win in the 2011 Copa del Rey final, his first trophy in Spain; a Champions League semi-final defeat in 2011 (2-0 at the Bernabéu, 1-1 at the Camp Nou); four Clásicos in 18 days in April and May 2011; the Supercopa brawl in August 2011, when he poked Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye. In April 2012, Madrid won 2-1 at the Camp Nou, with Ronaldo scoring the winner in a result that effectively decided the title. They finished that season with a then-record 100 points. Mourinho’s last Clásico was a 2-1 win at the Bernabéu in March 2013, and he finished unbeaten in his final five meetings with Barcelona.

His relationship with the club is also personal. Mourinho was an assistant to Bobby Robson at Barcelona in 1996-97, and he interviewed for the head coach job in 2008. The board chose Pep Guardiola. Mourinho then spent the next five years as Barcelona’s chief rival. We also saw this in his Netflix documentary, which is worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet.

Hansi Flick arrives with a different history. Since taking over in 2024, he has made Barcelona the team Madrid least like to face. By our count, Barcelona under Flick won 4-0 at the Bernabéu in October 2024, 5-2 in the Supercopa in January 2025, 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final in April 2025 and 4-3 in La Liga in May 2025. Madrid won 2-1 in October 2025, and then Barcelona beat them 3-2 in the Supercopa final in January 2026 and 2-0 at the Camp Nou in May 2026.

That is six wins from seven meetings, and their football could not be more different.

Flick’s Barcelona push high, press in numbers, and pass quickly through the lines. Mourinho’s Real Madrid sit in a 4-2-3-1, drop into a mid-block that looks like a 4-4-2, and break fast. The 5-0 in 2010 was the high line’s finest hour; the 2-1 in April 2012 was the counter-attack’s.

The history in numbers

The all-time official record is almost perfectly level. Barcelona and Real Madrid have met 264 times in competitive matches, with 106 wins each and 52 draws, according to Barcelona’s own figures and HapSport. Sports Mole lists Real Madrid ahead (107-106 with 51 draws), so the numbers depend on the counting method. In La Liga alone, Real Madrid lead 80-77 with 35 draws.

Lionel Messi is the all-time top scorer in the fixture with 26 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo and Alfredo Di Stéfano share the Real Madrid record with 18.

The last seven Clásicos

Date Competition Result Venue
26 Oct 2024 La Liga Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona Bernabéu
12 Jan 2025 Supercopa Real Madrid 2-5 Barcelona Jeddah
26 Apr 2025 Copa del Rey final Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid (aet) Seville
11 May 2025 La Liga Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid Montjuïc
26 Oct 2025 La Liga Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona Bernabéu
11 Jan 2026 Supercopa final Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid Jeddah
10 May 2026 La Liga Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid Camp Nou

The last two meetings matter most. In January, Raphinha scored twice and Robert Lewandowski once as Barcelona won the Supercopa final 3-2 in Jeddah, with Vinícius Júnior and Gonzalo García scoring for Madrid. In May, Marcus Rashford scored from a free kick in the ninth minute and Ferran Torres added a second in the 18th, and the 2-0 win clinched Barcelona’s 29th La Liga title with a 14-point lead and three games to spare.

Neither Rashford nor Torres plays for Barcelona any more. Torres is at Paris Saint-Germain, and Rashford is back at Manchester United. That tells you how much the squad has changed.

Instead of Rashford, Barcelona has Anthony Gordon, while Real Madrid added Trent Alexander-Arnold.

How the game could be won: the tactics

1. The high line against Mbappé

This is the main question. Flick’s Barcelona defend 30 or 40 metres from their own goal, with centre-backs who step up together to catch runners offside. When it works, it is spectacular. In Istanbul, it left Victor Osimhen, one of Europe’s fastest strikers, offside six times. He completed two passes and won three of nine duels. When it fails, one mistimed step leaves a runner in on goal.

Kylian Mbappé is the best runner Barcelona will face this season. He scored the equaliser against Roma by exploiting a lapse in the home side’s man-marking, and he has 72 Champions League goals. For Barcelona, the question is whether the back line can hold its timing for 90 minutes at the Camp Nou; for Madrid, whether the midfield can find him with the ball before the flag goes up. A single clean ball over the top could settle the match.

In the last El Clásicos, Barcelona’s high line worked very well against Real Madrid. Mbappé and Vini kept running offside.

2. Madrid’s mid-block and counter

Mourinho’s team lined up in Rome in a 4-2-3-1 that often looked like a 4-4-2 without the ball. They sat in a mid-block, let Roma have 54% of the possession, and still created the better chances. That is the template for Barcelona. Expect Madrid to give them the ball in non-threatening areas and wait.

The difficulty is Vinícius. His ban takes out the player who, in the words of one preview, turns a clearance into a chance. Güler, Diomande, Endrick and Espí are the options, but none runs at defenders the way he does. Diomande will most likely get the chance to start because of his recent form.

3. Corners and set pieces

Madrid’s three late goals against Roma all came from corners. Güler supplied two of the assists. Rüdiger, Espí and Endrick scored. Barcelona’s corner handling will be tested, as Madrid look dangerous when they arrive from deep.

4. Midfield control

Pedri and Rodri against Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni is the quiet decider. Barcelona need to keep the ball and dictate the tempo; if they do, Madrid’s pivot will be dragged around. If Madrid win the midfield, the counters begin. Valverde will apparently return to right back; Mourinho tested it against Leipzig. Bernardo Silva will take his place in the midfield. This could be interesting as two ex-Manchester City midfielders will face each other.

5. Flick’s final third

After Istanbul, the coach admitted that decision-making in the final third was not good enough in the first half. Barcelona create a huge number of chances. Against a mid-block and a goalkeeper like Thibaut Courtois, the quality of the last pass matters more than volume.

Five battles to watch

  1. Mbappé v Barcelona’s high line. Speed against timing.
  2. Yamal v Madrid’s right-back. Yamal had a goal and an assist at Betis. He is Kopa’s favourite and a leading Ballon d’Or contender. Whoever faces him will need help.
  3. Pedri and Rodri v Valverde/Silva and Tchouaméni. Control against disruption.
  4. Güler and Bellingham between the lines. Mourinho has used Güler as an inverted playmaker, and Bellingham scored against Málaga. Their movement can pull Barcelona’s pivot out of position.
  5. Courtois v the Barcelona front line. Madrid’s goalkeeper made several saves in May. Raphinha, Jesus, Gordon and Adeyemi will test him.

Team news and predicted line-ups

Barcelona

Out: Dani Olmo (serious muscle problem from the PSG game), Andreas Christensen, Eric García and Roony Bardghji. Jules Koundé could return. Raphinha is available after coming off the bench against Betis, and Joan García is fit in goal.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Joan García – Espart, Cubarsí, Martin, Cancelo – Pedri, Rodri, Fermín López – Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon

Real Madrid

Vinícius is suspended. Mendy, Asencio and Rodrygo are out. Mbappé is a near-certain starter, and Endrick and Carlos Espí are bench options.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Courtois – Valverde, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella – Bernardo Silva/Camavinga, Tchouaméni – Diomande, Bellingham, Güler – Mbappé.

Both XIs are projections from different sources, which, of course, disagree. The line-ups will be presented 1-2 hours before the match.

Players to watch

  • Lamine Yamal (Barcelona). Eight goals and nine assists in his first ten club games, plus another goal and assist at Betis.
  • Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid). 72 Champions League goals and the youngest player to reach 100 appearances. He led the World Cup scoring with 10 goals, according to SI.
  • Raphinha (Barcelona). Scored twice in the Supercopa final in January. If fit, he is Barcelona’s most dangerous runner.
  • Arda Güler (Real Madrid). Two corner assists in Rome, now playing as an inverted playmaker.
  • Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid). A Ballon d’Or nominee and one of three Englishmen on the list.
  • Gabriel Jesus (Barcelona). The striker nobody expected to lead the line. Flick says he is “at a top level”.

The Ballon d’Or connection

The 70th Ballon d’Or will be awarded at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, the evening after the Clásico. Voting closed on 28 September, so nothing on the pitch will change the result. But it adds a layer. Yamal and Mbappé are both nominees, as are Rodri and Bellingham. Kane, who plays for Bayern, was the 1/3 favourite on 22 October, with Yamal at 2/1 and Mbappé at 16/1.

Our prediction and betting angles

The Clásico looks even closer than it did a week ago. Barcelona have the home advantage and the league lead, but they have just lost for the first time, shipped four goals in Paris, and now have Olmo on the injury list. Real Madrid have Mbappé, two 4-1 wins in a week and a coach who knows the fixture inside out, even without Vinícius. The most likely scenario is a game with goals at both ends and a result that could go either way.

Tip: Both teams to score. Predicted score: Barcelona 2-2 Real Madrid.

Other angles to consider: Mbappé to score at any time (he scored in each of Madrid’s last two games, including a penalty against Sevilla); and over 2.5 goals, given both defences’ recent records.
